Parliament Week
This year, Oak Class took part in Parliament week, which encourages children to engage with and explore politics. The theme this year was 'Vote 100' as it is 100 years since women were first able to vote. We started our lessons by exploring how the law was changed. We were fascinated by the idea of creating a petition and enjoyed looking at examples that are currently online. We also learnt about the difference between Suffragettes and Suffragists and discussed whether it was right to use violence to get your voice heard. Afterwards, we created our own posters, supporting women's rights to vote.
In our second session, we held our own referendum. At first, we were not sure what it meant, but by the end of the lesson we were running a polling station and casting our votes in one! We decided to ask the question: should the age of voting be lowered to 13 years old in England? Interestingly, 9 people voted yes and 12 people voted no. We had a fantastic week and the children now seem much more empowered to discuss their views openly.
