Spirituality at Chesterton: Windows, Mirrors and Doors

Chesterton CE Primary School has introduced the concept of 'Windows, Mirrors and Doors' to enable children to develop their understanding of spirituality. We also feel that the Ofsted definition (below) is clear and simple for all to understand. Through our diverse programme of collective worship, pupils are given opportunities for spiritual learning, reflection and action.
  • ability to be reflective about their own beliefs (religious or otherwise) and perspective on life
  • knowledge of, and respect for, different people’s faiths, feelings and values
  • sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them
  • use of imagination and creativity in their learning
  • willingness to reflect on their experiences
Collective Worship is planned and delivered carefully, with the school’s Vision and foundation in mind. Each half-term, one of our school values in the focus for Collective Worship. This is then sub-divided into linked weekly themes (e.g. Hope – positivity, belief, dreams, expectations). The plan for each half-term is carefully mapped, including Class Worships, Church team worships, singing worships, theme worships, celebration worships and other special events. Spiritual development is intertwined into many elements of the curriculum and wider school life (see SMSC and Spirituality documents). Through the concept of 'Windows, Mirrors and Doors', we enable to the staff, parents and children to recognise opportunities for spiritual reflection.

Our local church team, including our Rector, take the lead on Thursday Collective Worship and for major events in the Christian/school calendar (Harvest, Christmas, Easter, Leavers). One of the lay team organises an annual Prayer Space week where each year group has the chance to reflect on a particular subject.

Whilst our Collective Worship has some distinctively Christian characteristics, we plan the topics and subject matter in a way that promotes diversity and variety of content. Through our different focus each day of the week and a wide range of different 'leaders', our offering includes those of all faiths and none. There is no expectation that all of our pupils hold a Christian faith and no compulsion to pray or follow set beliefs.
